1. Frequently Asked Questions
  2.

  1. Are you (Vetese) a member of the CKC?
Yes we are a member of the CKC.

  2. Are all of your dogs registered with CKC?
No, all of our dogs are not registered with the CKC, some are registered with the ASVD (Altdeutscher Schaferhunde-Verband Deutschland e.v.) which is a Long Haired German Shepherd Club specific to the breed.  All of our dogs are/will be multi-registered with either the AKC/CKC/SV and UKC/ASVD.

  3. Why aren't all of your dogs registered with the CKC?
Any dog that is registered in the ASVD club cannot be registered with the CKC because they do not recognize this club as the Long Haired German Shepherd is not considered 'breed standard'.  Please visit our 'About The Breed' section for more information.

  4. What is the difference between the CKC and the UKC?
The UKC is the largest all-breed dog registry in the world, they recognize rare and specialty breeds.  They were founded on the concept of the total dog whereas the CKC operates on breed standard, which basically means the look of the dog.

  5. Are your puppies registered?
Yes our puppies are registered but are sold on a limited registration, private contract.  We have a non-breeding agreement contract between the buyer and our kennel which states that we (the kennel) will hold the registration papers until proof of spay/neuter.  At that time we will transfer registration of your puppy in your name. Puppies will be registered with either the CKC or UKC depending on which litters they come from.

  6. What is a limited registration?
A limited registration prohibits you (the buyer) from breeding your puppy/dog. If the dog is bred, the resulting offspring will not be recognized or registrable.  Our limited registration requires you to have your puppy spayed/neutered by the age of 7 months old.

  7. When will I get the "papers" for my puppy?
We have 6 months to send you the registration papers after proof of spay/neuter. However, once you send us a proof of spay/neuter certificate or letter from your Veterinarian and I personally contact your Veterinarian for verification of said certificate and/or letter I will immediately send the registration papers to you provided there is no delay from the registry club.

  8. Do you offer a health guarantee for your puppies?
Yes we do offer a two year health guarantee for our puppies.  Please see our "Info" page - "Health Guarantee" section for more details.

  9. Do I have to sign a non-breeding contract/health guarantee agreement when purchasing a puppy from you?
Yes, this is mandatory with the purchase of our puppies.

  10. Why do I have to sign a contract/health guarantee agreement?
We require contract agreements because we want to insure the health, lifestyle and care for our puppies to live a long happy life.

  11. Can I breed my puppy that I purchase from you?
No, as stated above our puppies come with a "limited registration" which means that you do not have "breeding rights" and you will not obtain these papers until I receive a veterinarian certificate stating that your puppy has been spayed or neutered. As well, it is in the contract between Buyer and Breeder that you will NOT breed the puppy.  All new puppy owners that purchase a puppy from us do not have our permission to breed their puppy.

  12. What happens if I go against our contract and breed my puppy/dog anyway?
Going against the contract agreement will result in the full health guarantee being null and void and you will also be charged a fine of $2000 plus $1500 per puppy in the litter(s) had that you have against contract agreement.

  13. Why can't I breed our puppy that we purchased from you?
The reason you can't breed any of the Vetese puppies is because I am trying to protect my line and I do not want it compromised. As well, it is in an effort to control puppy over-population which could result in unwanted puppies in shelters, strays, serious medical conditions, death, abuse, etc..

  14. What are the benefits of spaying/neutering my puppy?
Spaying or neutering your dog is an important part of responsible pet ownership.  The benefits extend far beyond population control. As a result of the procedure your puppy will be healthier, friendlier and a more attentive pet. Spayed and neutered dogs also have a reduced risk of certain infections, tumours and cancers. They're also a lot easier to train and less likely to fight with other dogs. Neutering is also an important safety precaution as it may help prevent your puppy/dog from roaming and possibly running away.
Unneutered males that are not able to mate experience frustration, which can lead to aggression.
Unspayed females attract unwanted attention every six months from roaming unneutered males.

  15. How many litters per year do you have?
We only have 1-2 litters per year.

  16. What makes you different from some other breeders?
We breed for quality not quantity. If a breeder has more than 8-10 litters per year how can they possibly work with all the puppies?! We believe we should spend time with the puppies and socialize them. We try to learn their temperaments so we can place them in the appropriate type homes. Our Shepherds may cost more but you are getting a quality dog. Other breeders can charge less because they are concerned with the volume of puppies.

  17. How much are your puppies?
Our puppies are $1500 (Canadian Dollars).

  18. Are there any other charges?
If you are having your puppy shipped to you then there are additional charges for shipping which would be determined upon obtaining a shipping quote relative to your destination.

  19. What if I don't care about having my puppy registered...could I pay less for the puppy?
No, all of our puppies are and will be registered.  The price of the puppy remains the same whether you want the registration papers or not.

  20. Do I have to pay a deposit and if so how much?
Yes you do have to pay a non refundable deposit of $400 (Canadian Dollars).

  21. When do I pay the deposit?
For current available litters the deposit should be paid immediately upon application approval to ensure a puppy is held for you.  For a proven bitch, deposits can be made well in advance and upon application approval. For a non-proven bitch a deposit can be placed once we are sure a breeding "took" and upon application approval.  You should pay your deposit as soon as possible to ensure your spot on the waiting list.

  22. Who has first pick of the litter?
Our kennel may reserve first pick of the litter.  Whether this is the case or not pick of the litter will depend on deposits received respectively.

  23. What if I don't get to have a puppy out of my original chosen litter?
"Chosen Litters" are not guaranteed, this is just a choice, if for whatever reason you do not get to have a puppy from this litter you will be put on another list of your choice, again the "picking order" will depend on earlier deposits received for that specific litter.  "Bumped" deposits are automatically moved ahead of recent deposits received.

  24. What if for whatever reason I change my mind and do not want a puppy, can I get my deposit back?
No, all deposits are non refundable.

  25. When do I pay the remainder of the puppy price?
The remainder of the puppy price ($1500 - $400 deposit = $1100) must be paid by the time the puppy is 6 weeks old. If the puppy is being shipped, any and all shipping costs must also be paid at this time.

  26. What happens if I don't pay the remainder of the puppy price by the time the puppy is 7 weeks old?
Vetese will sell the puppy to another buyer and you will not get your deposit back as it is non-refundable.

  27. Why do I have to pay for my puppy by the age of 6 weeks old?
We do this to ensure that our puppies are sold for sure.  If we wait too late to receive payment and something goes wrong we will have to try to re-sell the puppy at an older age and this can be hard to do.  This way if the puppy price is not paid by the 6th week we have time to find the puppy another home and still be able to leave our kennel by 8 weeks old.

  28. How old do your puppies have to be before they can go to their new home?
Our puppies have to be 8 weeks old before they can go to their new homes.

  29. Can I return my puppy?
Yes, you can return your puppy within 72 hours of receipt but you will be responsible for any all shipping costs.  As long as the puppy is returned in good health and form as it was given you will receive your money back minus the deposit amount as that is non-refundable.  If there is anything wrong with the puppy due to any action or neglect on your part you will not be refunded any money.

  30. What if after the 72 hours situations arise where I am not able to keep my puppy?
Depending on the situation we will try to take the puppy back or find the puppy a new home.  You will be responsible for any and all shipping costs.  Vetese reserves the right for first option if a situation arises that you can no longer keep the puppy.

  31. If I give my puppy away to a friend or resell the puppy to someone is the health guarantee agreement and contract still valid and transferable?
No, the health guarantee agreement and contract is NOT valid if the puppy is given away or sold to another party without notification and approval from our Kennel.

  32. Why do I have to fill out a "puppy application"?
Because we care about all of our dogs and puppies, we want to be sure that they will be going to a good home.  We are not looking for a "quick buck", we are in this for the love of the breed and we want to be sure that all of our dogs are placed in a loving home environment and will be part of the family.

  33. Can I come to your home to see the puppies and your adult dogs?
Yes, you are welcomed to come to our home once our puppies are of the appropriate age for 'visitors' but we ask that you make an appointment first and that your puppy application is pre-approved.

  34. Can I bring my current pet with us to meet your puppies and dogs?
No, you cannot bring any pets with you as we do not want to risk our puppies and dogs of any possible threats, diseases, etc.

  35. Why do I have to fill out a puppy application and be pre-approved before I can meet your dogs?
I do this for the safety of my dogs, home and family.  I can't allow just anyone to come to my home as I feel this has great potential risk in a number of situations.

  36. Do you have a certain 'theme' to be used in naming puppies?
Yes, at Vetese we use an 'Alphabetized Italian Litter Theme' This means that each litter had is named in order through the alphabet (ie: A, B, C, etc) and any puppy in a particular litter will be named with an Italian name with the corresponding letter at the start of their name.  For example all puppies in Litter A would have to be named with an Italian name starting with the letter "A" (ex: Vetese's Acerra) and all puppies in Litter B would have to be named with an Italian name starting with the letter "B," and so on.

  37. Why do you use an alphabetized litter theme?
A lot of breeders use this method as a way of keeping track and recognizing the puppy and/or litter easily.

  38. Why do the registered names have to be Italian?
Our kennel name, Vetese is an Italian family name named after my grandmother so I have chosen to honor this name and my heritage by having an Italian name theme to go along with the kennel name.

  39. Can I name my puppy?
Yes, as long as you pick a name that starts with the appropriate letter, is Italian and the name is a respectable one.  Also, the name must be picked out prior to 6 weeks of age, if it is not then Vetese will pick out a name for the puppy.

  40. What if I want to call my puppy something different other than the registered name?
You can call your puppy by a different name which would be referred to as a "calling name" but the puppy WILL be referred to and registered with the Kennel Name.  Another possibility would be to shorten the registered name for a calling name more suitable but still carrying the original (ex: Vetese's Benedetto - call 'Detto' for short).

  41. Can I purchase more than one puppy at a time?
No, we do not recommend doing this as you should never bring more than one young puppy in to the home at the same time.

  42. Can I purchase a puppy for a friend or family member?
No, you cannot purchase a puppy for anyone other than yourself.

  43. How do you pronounce Vetese?
    It is pronounced Va-Tess
