Whelping Box
Weaning Box

Pictured above is our whelping box with the weaning box added on.  When the puppies are about 2 weeks old we attach the weaning box, also made of melamine.  At this time the hinged door of the whelping box is taken off and replaced with a 'doggie door' of such in order for the puppies to be able to go out into the box to use the bathroom and/or play.  On the other end of the weaning box you will see there is a small opening, this is to make it easy for the dam to jump in, again without trampling the puppies. Both 'doors' can be put in to close off any entrys if necessary.  Generally the whelping box is kept for sleeping, nursing and eventually eating.  In the weaning box we have a floor called G-Floor which is great for clean ups.  We also put some newspaper down at the end of the box.  The puppies stay in here until they are about 5 weeks old or until I am ready to let them go outside to their 'puppy house.'  ;-)

**Many thanks to my father and my good friend Rob Sampson for building these boxes for me, they did a great job!

Pictured above is our "Puppy House" which is 8'x16' and the fenced run is 12'x16'.  This is where the puppies go at approximately 5 weeks of age until they are 8 weeks old and leave to go to their new homes.  It has a dog door so they can go in and out whenever they like which is a great for giving them a headstart to housebreaking.  They also have their own little pool for playing in on the hot summer days.

***Special thanks to my very good friend Terry Williams for building our 'puppy house' not to mention the long list of other things he has done, always such a huge help to me.

For all the help these special men (my Dad, Rob and Terry) have given and for always being there for me, I thank them from the bottom of my heart...without them I would be lost!!

FAQ

Vetese Long Haired German Shepherds

Pictured above is our whelping box, where the dams go to have their puppies.  It is a very well constructed box made of melamine.  It has a hinged entry door making it easy for the dam to get in and out of without accidentally harming the puppies but when layed down it is still high enough that the puppies cannot get out.  It also has a removable pig rail made of piping so the puppies are not accidentally laid on by their mother.  Underneath the blanket there is a waterproof fabric which is easy to clean for any whelping messes, etc..  Also, underneath is a special heating pad for puppies.  Hanging over top is a heat lamp.  All to ensure that the puppies are kept warm enough.
